The Wheelchair Foundation organization is leading an international effort to create awareness of the needs and abilities of people with physical disabilities, to promote the joy of giving, create global friendship, and to deliver a wheelchair to every child, teen and adult in the world who needs one, but cannot afford one. For these people, the Wheelchair Foundation delivers Hope, Mobility and Independence.
It is estimated that at least 100 million children, teens and adults worldwide need a wheelchair but cannot afford one. Some international organizations believe that the number could be as high as 6% of the population of developing countries.
Since March 2001, Rotarians from around the world have supported the Wheelchair Foundation and Rotary Clubs have helped deliver more than 850,000 wheelchairs worldwide.
This year the Rotary Club of Pelham decided to join other Rotarians by making a contribution to the Wheelchair Foundation. Rather than collecting the money to fund a wheelchair, Rotarians were given a "bag lunch" (containing a sandwich, chips and cookie) at our first meeting of the year instead of the regular buffet meal and dessert. The money saved from the cost of lunch funded our clubs donation of one wheelchair made in honor of Dist. Gov. Alicia Michael to the Wheelchair Foundation's Panama Wheelchair Project.
Although it was just one wheelchair, it changed a person's life in a way most of us cannot even imagine. They now have mobility - giving them independence and hope.
We plan to continue to support this project.
Pelham Rotarians were treated to a "bag lunch" at the first meeting of the 2014-2015. At the time members did not know the purpose of the "bag lunch" but went along with the understanding of the words written on the bag of "Service Above Self."
Either the sandwiches were good or everyone was really hungry.
This is not what Randy, Chris and Marcella were expecting for lunch but they went along understanding that it was for a good cause.
Rotary Clubs and Rotarians joined the mission of The Wheelchair Foundation in March 2001.

Melia Davis presents Dist. Gov. Alicia Michael with a gift basket from the Pelham Club and a Certificate from the Wheelchair Foundation in recognition of the donation made in her honor.
The wheelchairs average 45 pounds. They are constructed of powder-coated steel tubing, foldable for ease of transport and are equipped with removable arm rests, swing-away footrests, solid rubber tires, composite rims and heavy duty front casters.
